In other words...

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He shall direct your paths"
Proverbs 3:5-6

My favorite version of the Bible is the New King James Version.  I believe it's the most accurate translation, because it's a word-for-word translation, as opposed to a thought-for-thought translation.  Plus I don't have to worry about thee's and thou's....

But I often read other versions; sometimes to better understand tricky passages, sometimes to get more insight into a passage I know well.  And that's the case today.

I think this might be one of the most well-known and relied upon verses in the Bible; at least with my circle of friends.  But I've heard different versions of it, as different people quote it, and so I thought it would be fun to look at all the different ~ and yet the same ~ things, that this verse promises us...

The blue is the New King James; under that are some words used in other translations, and the italics is the meaning indicated by the Hebrew word.

Trust in
Hope in... Have confidence in... Confide in
be bold in; feel safe in

the Lord
Yahweh... Jehovah
the one true God

with all your heart
from your whole heart
with all your heart, will, mind, soul, understanding, knowledge, thoughts, memory, conscience

and lean not
do not lean into... do not rely on... do not trust in....
do not depend on
do not lean upon or support yourself

on your own understanding
on your own prudence... on the wisdom of your soul
on your own understanding or discernment

In all your ways
In all you do
on your way, on your road, on your distance, on your journey,
on your direction, on your course of life, in your moral character

acknowledge Him
seek His will... know Him... think on Him
know Him; perceive Him; find out about Him; be wise about Him

and He will direct your paths
 He will show you which path to take... He will make your paths straight... He will make your paths smooth... He will direct your steps... He will make your paths plain
He will make your way; path; road; way of life
To be right; to be straight; to be level; to be upright; to be just;
to be lawful; to be smooth; to be agreeable

It's a beautiful promise, no matter how you look at it.
